Editing (Stage 5)

Layering

Having studied Rihanna's 'Disturbia' video in the research period, we were very inspired by the use of layering throughout the video giving the audience a sense of 'multi-focus'. We found this technique worked best with dance sequences and lip synching shots. This is because the contrast between their motion provides a confusing juxtaposition where the audience are not sure where to look first (relating to the style of 'Surrealism'). We found inverting and increasing the saturation of their natural colouring furthered the contrast, which ultimately heightens the confusion between the layers. To create these effects we had to use several editing tools:

1. Motion blur – creates action lines of image, leaving a visual 'echo' of motion
2. Ghostly blur – creates several faded replicas of actual image on top of entire clip
3. Colour inverse – Maintains inverted colours into a harsher, sharper contrast
4. Ghosting – creates a faded trail of the image and shakes the frame
5. Brightness and contrast – increases natural wash of image
6. Saturation levels – adjustment of colour strength and boldness
7. Opacity depth transparency modification
8. Cross-fade – layering two images over each other, fading from picture to picture

Below are a few examples of the outcome from this process:

Three layers; Lips, hands tying and eyes looking.

Three layers; Performer dancing, feet jumping and trapped in netting.

Two layers; Female running past lights in forest and two performers shaking heads.

Two layers; Lips and flickering eye.
