Editing (Stage 6)

Ghosting

This effect is a very simple technique to process, but for it's maximum-impact potential it has to be combined with other effects and ultimately it has to be used appropriately. We first saw this effect used in Kanye West's 'Paranoid' music video, and then in Imogen Heap's promo for 'Headlock'. The appearance of this effect also highly relates to a modern development of 'German Expressionism'; dream-like haziness. We wanted to use this effect mainly on dance performance sequences as it adds further movement to the shot, manipulates an image into a shaky layer of replicas and ultimately looks very effective and professional. To create the effect, the following editorial tools were needed:

1. Motion blur – creates action lines of image, leaving a visual echo of motion
2. Ghosting – creates a faded trail of the image and shakes the frame
3. Brightness and contrast – increase/decrease natural wash of image
4. Dust and scratches – Sharpens and smoothens image from excessive editorial manipulation
5. Speed/duration – increase or decrease pace of shots, reverse action using minus figures
6. Crop and zoom – only certain part of shot in the frame, enlarging real size

Below are still images from our video, where we have used this effect:
